The National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center states that every year, 17,810 people sustain a spinal cord injury. Additionally, there are about 294,000 people in the U.S. who live with a spinal cord injury.

If you were one of the many involved in a car crash or another type of accident who ended up with a spinal cord injury, it may be difficult to get used to your new normal after you leave the rehabilitation center. As you adjust to living with this injury, there are a few steps you may take to make the transition easier.

  1. Eat well and exercise

No matter your injury level, make eating well and getting daily physical activity priorities. Regular exercise and eating nutritious foods can make it easier to regain some independence. For example, you may find it becomes easier to go from your wheelchair to your bed and vice versa.

  1. Maintain a daily routine

During rehabilitation therapy, you probably maintained a predictable daily schedule. Try to do the same once you return home to create positive habits and enhance your mental well-being.

  1. Think about going back to work or school

If you went to school or worked before the injury accident, talk to your employer or the school you attend about necessary accommodations. You may also be eligible for continuing education programs designed to help those with disabilities.

  1. Look into local support groups

Joining a spinal cord injury support group can help you meet other people with similar challenges, share your ideas and work through your emotions. If there is no support group in your local area, think about starting one.

Your life may look completely different than it did before the spinal cord injury. Although it may take some getting used to, rely on local and national resources, your loved ones and those you meet in support groups to create a new, fulfilling lifestyle.
